From Portland to Great Vow Zen Monastery, via I-5
driving time is about 1.5 hours from downtown Portland and 2.5 hours from Seattle.

  1. From I-5 North from Portland or South from Seattle go to Exit 36. This is the southern-most exit for Longview/Kelso. (The interstate sign says: to Long Beach, Washington Route #432 and to Oregon Route #30.)
  2. Exit and go WEST towards Longview.
  3. Stay in the left lane on WA #432 for about 3 miles.
  4. Just past the BURGER KING turn left onto OREGON WAY. This also known as 15th street. Look for the large green sign saying TO OREGON.
  5. Cross the Columbia River into Oregon on the LEWIS AND CLARK Bridge.
  6. Just over the bridge take the first exit to Route #30 WEST towards Clatskanie.
  7. Drive on Route #30 for about 12 miles (to mile post 63) into the small town of Clatskanie (the speed limit is 30 miles per hour).
  8. Turn Right, onto Nehalem Street. This is just before Hump's Restaurant at the traffic signal.
  9. After about two blocks this street veers to the left and becomes 5th Street.
  10. Stay on this road until you reach the monastery, about 5 miles. (The road changes names a couple of times.) Just outside of town, DO NOT turn left to the poplar farm. After 2.9 miles the speed limit changes to 20 miles per hour and there is a fork; stay LEFT on the main road.
  11. You will pass the Quincy Store and soon see Quincy Greenhouse on the left. The monastery is to the RIGHT across the street from the greenhouse. 

From Portland, Highway 30 alternative route
Driving time: approximately 1 hour, 20 minutes

  1. From Portland area, take Hwy 30 towards St. Helens.
    Continue on Hwy 30 through St. Helens and through Rainier.
    After approximately 70 minutes, you will get to the small, rural town of Clatskanie.
    Turn Right, onto Nehalem Street. This is just before Hump's Restaurant at the traffic signal.
  2. After about two blocks this street veers to the left and becomes 5th Street.
  3. Stay on this road until you reach the monastery, about 5 miles. (The road changes names a couple of times.) Just outside of town, DO NOT turn left to the poplar farm. After 2.9 miles the speed limit changes to 20 miles per hour and there is a fork; stay LEFT on the main road.

From Portland Airport
Driving time: approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes

  1. Take 205 North.
  2. Go north on Interstate 5 (I-5) into Washington state until you reach Exit 36.

From Astoria/Northern Oregon Coast Route

  1. Head east on Hwy 30 from Astoria toward Longview, Washington.
  2. After approximately 35 miles, you will enter the small, rural town of Clatskanie.

Amtrak Train

Greyhound Bus Lines

Coming from Portland, the bus arrives at the Kelso-Longview train station at about 1 pm daily. The Portland-bound bus leaves at about 4:30 pm daily. The bus stop is about 25 miles from the monastery. Please let us know well in advance if you'd like us to pick you up.
