When anyone is thinking about entering training with us or anywhere else, we recommend investigating these five things: 1) Are the place and people ethical? Do they actively teach and practice high ethical standards? 2) Does your heart feel attracted to the teacher and/or the community? 3) Does your rational mind find the teacher and community reasonable and intellectually sound? 4) What are the senior students (those who have been following the teacher for some time) like? Are the results of training good? 5) What is the teachers' training background? Have they done in training what they are asking you to do? |

| Those in training commit to at least one month of residency and follow the daily schedule which includes 3-4 hours of zazen and 5-6 hours of work-practice. Residents attend or help staff our events and weekend retreats and attend all six-day, silent meditation intensives. Close contact with the teachers allows residents to learn new ways of relating to others, to ask about specific teachings, and to receive guidance on their spiritual path. The teachers use a unique blend of Soto and Rinzai Zen in their training. They offer koan practice to students whom they think it will benefit, but it is not mandatory. Private interviews with the teachers (sanzen) are usually offered once a week, and more often during sesshin. |
